P&M Supports Volunteer Police Cadet Marine Unit

Peters & May is proud to be supporting the Volunteer Police Cadet Marine Unit, in association with registered charity Balham and Tooting Community Association in their efforts to bring their newly donated RIB from Gibraltar to Mercury Yacht Harbour in Hamble.

Martyn Potter and his colleague are both Police Officers who voluntarily run a Volunteer Police Cadet Marine Unit based at Mercury Yacht Harbour in Hamble. The unit is supported by the Met Police Sailing Club and has been running for about 4 years.

In recent months the RIB that was used by the Unit to take young people out on the water, often for the first time, has been made unavailable to them. With this predicament looming, Martyn sought other options and was put in touch with the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) who regularly seize RIB's as illegal imports and from drug / contraband smugglers. Following a number of communications, the RGP have donated an 8 meter RIB complete with outboard engines to the Marine Cadet Unit, and Balham and Tooting Community Association to help by maintaining the Marine Unit for Cadets and youth engagement projects for vulnerable young people in London.

The team from 'Operation Hotfuzz' as the project has been named, will be leaving Gibraltar today and towing the boat back to the UK. Peters & May will arrange the T1 to export from Gibraltar to the UK where we will apply for a “Charitable Status” import from the T1. We expect them to arrive back in our warehouse on 9th March and on the 10th we will close the T1 and apply for the “Charitable status” relief. If Customs reject the application, and subsequent appeals fail, the charity will be required to pay the VAT.

Other supporters of this project include Monarch Airlines, Volvo UK, Brittany Ferries, Coastline Marine Ltd and PRS Distribution (Heathrow).

Peters & May wish the team and the Volunteer Police Cadet Marine Unit the very best of luck in the future.

***Addition*** Peters & May would like to thank its Gibraltar agent Eastgate Freight Services for the their local assistance and expertise in handling this extremely challenging export across the Gibraltar /  Spain border.
